Tide for a Cause ESL Series: Peck Sink Preserve

Peck Sink Preserve

Peck Sink Preserve is 112 acres and was specifically acquired to protect groundwater in Hernando County. The preserve features a deeply cut drainage channel leading to a sinkhole complex with 5 impressive swallet holes where surface water runs directly into the Floridian Aquifer. Water from 11,000 acres immediately surrounding the property drains directly to the sinks. This includes stormwater, that collects, trash, debris, pollutants, and excess nutrients (Nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer etc.).

The ESL Program in cooperation with the Department of Public Works and The Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Department of Environmental Protection purchased the property and developed a stormwater treatment system to improve water quality before it enters the aquifer. While management here is focused primarily on water treatment, ESL also manages a small stand of planted timber, controls invasive plants, and manages wildlife. Hernando County was recently awarded a grant from the DEP Recreational Trails Program to construct an ADA accessible trail and overlook platform for public access improvements and education onsite. Beyond the development of the Trail and Overlook Platform, ESL will be developing additional parking for public access and hiking trails (long-range plan).

Peck Sink Preserve Clean Up

Join the Hernando County Environmentally Sensitive Lands ProgramTidal Brewing, and Roots Creative Company in a clean-up workday event at Peck Sink Preserve! Together we will be removing trash and debris from the property and edges of the sink to prevent contamination of our aquifer. Removal of trash across the property will assist not only in the beautification of the preserve but also increase the functionality of the ecosystem for plants and wildlife communities. All trash will be brought back to the check-in area. This event is part of the recent Tide For a Cause project between the three organizations to help raise awareness of the County's Preserves and a special limited release beer will be brewed by Tidal Brewing in honor of Peck Sink.
